Frequently Asked Questions
Why should my hotel participate?
Quite simply to inform your clients and to inform yourself.
Businesses and leisure travellers have grown to expect to be able to put a value on the impact of their travel - indeed many companies are now committed to doing so as part of their CSR policy. Increasingly they will choose to work with suppliers who can satisfy this demand.
As a business you will have a CSR strategy of your own. Emissions reduction may well feature within that agenda, Carepar provide you with a way of measuring and benchmarking your reduction over time.
Savings you will make on your energy costs should cover the small annual fee many times over, even without allowing for business that will be attracted to you as a demonstrably responsible company.

Why participate in Carepar, can't I do this myself?
To facilitate valid comparison there has to be one standard basis for calculation across the Industry, rather than different algorithms for different brands.
External validation, which is provided by The Carbon Consultancy, reinforces the credibility of the carePAR index, and assures companies who rely on the data that they may do so with confidence.

How can I use this data for my event?
We can provide values for the meeting or banqueting rooms you use. We can also supply values for rooms, so even if you are syndicating delegates across a number of hotels and combine the values within an Offset Calculation Tool in which delegates can factor in their travel to arrive at a combined "footprint".
Is this all about offset?
No. We are about measurement and promoting best practice in the Hotel and Events industry. We do provide access to offset schemes.
Are you a "Green" Company?
No business is truly carbon neutral. We operate as a "virtual" company - without offices or a permenant base. We endeavour to be environmentally aware in all that we do, we monitor our emissions, endeavour to reduce them as much as we can and offset what we cannot eliminate.
As a part of our own CSR policy a proportion of our profits will be used to fund projects designed to heighten awareness of environmental issues amongst Hotel Management students in universities and colleges.

What use is the data for my hotel or venue?
You can use the figures to benchmark your emissions and track progress over time. Once calculated they can be used in answering questions related to the environment in proposals and tenders.
How does an hotelier submit their data?
Hotels can register online in a simple process.
Stage one: They agree the terms of business, and register their hotel location and contact details. Stage Two:They answer a series of questions regarding their hotel or venue, including:
Stage Three: They answer a set of questions regarding energy usage, including:
Stage one: They agree the terms of business, and register their hotel location and contact details. Stage Two:They answer a series of questions regarding their hotel or venue, including:
- Overall size & facilities
- Details of each room type including number and average sizes.
- Function and meeting room sizes
Stage Three: They answer a set of questions regarding energy usage, including:
- Total energy consumption over a known period
- Details of vehicles used by the hotel in its business, and their annual mileage.
- Kwh value of any energy generated by the hotel through renewable schemes
Stage Four: Details of the hotel's policies regarding its own supply chain, its CSR policy and energy schemes currently employed by it. The data is then processed in an algorithm to determine the carePAR indices of accommodation and function space.
NB: The data entry process can be suspended or "parked" at any stage, and resumed at a later time.
How do I pay?
Payment is taken by credit card, the fees are determined by the size of the property, but will not exceed £500 per year for the largest hotel. Participation cost should never be a barrier to participation. We anticipate that by focussing on energy through this process the cost of participation will be recouped many times in reduced energy costs.
I have a chain of hotels can I set up a group arrangement with you?
Yes you can. A centralised arrangement will reduce your per property cost and enable you to look at your CarePAR indices across the group to benchmark properties against each other.
To initiate this arrangement contact us.
How do I know my carePAR indices for my hotel?
A certificate detailing the carePAR values will be made available for download as soon as your data processing is completed. The information will be available to you through the website.
What about monitoring changes over time?
We will ask you to revisit and update your profile every quarter, recording any physical changes to the property and updating your energy figures. Your Indices will be recalculated after each update and recertified to you.
